Tariffs, the Sentient Cheeto and the Trudeau

I was never exactly on Team Justin, having spent my fleeting youth on another Team Trudeau. I saw Justin’s election as a sign of the further populist and Americanization of Canadian politics–he was a name, not an effective leader. The notion that being the son of a Prime Minister qualified him to be Prime Minister was ridiculou.

Having resigned (with a fairly long tail) it’s possible that in these last weeks Justin defies the odds and starts to look like something different–not having anything to lose changes his math a bit. Yesterday, the American media led by the Sentient Cheeto imposed massive tariffs on Canadian goods, only two weeks after entering office. Justin’s press conference in response was…remarkably good.

I’m not an economist and the practice and nature of Economics has changed significantly since I even actively studied it, so I will defer to konwledgeable people on the tariffs themselves but I will say this–anybody who thinks the current American government’s economic policy has any basis in research or fact is wrong. Nothing this president does is considered or based on expertise–it’s government by a bully and a thug, and the next four years aren’t going to be great.

How this plays out is going to be interesting to say the least, but the disruption of the world economy has already started. I only hope it doesn’t go far.
