The Pitch
The pitcher controls the game in ways that aren't obvious to those who aren't familiar with its workings. When the pitcher has the ball, the game -- by definition -- stops. While the ball is on the mound, an eery silence can fall over the stadium.
The wind up and release sets the game in motion again with a sudden snap, unti the ball goes back to the mound.
