Lamport Stadium

Lamport Stadium is one of those distinctly Toronto places; as a kid, I used to ride by is all the time on the King streetcar on the way to the CNE. It fronts right onto King Street. We never quite knew what went on there, but we were always curious.

Lamport is one of a number of smaller stadiums that are scattered around Toronto, and it gets used for a lot of soccer mostly. This reflects the ethnic makeup of the neighbourhood, with a lot of first generation european immigrant. Toronto's Little Italy isn't far north.

On big soccer days now, the crowds at Lamport can be amazing. There's a huge parking lot right beside it, and it can be difficult to get a spot on the best of days.

Places like Lamport are important: it seems like every city is being overrun with mega-stadium projects for their professional sports teams, but these are largely inaccessible to the people of the city. They sit there like white elephants doing nothing most of the time. Places like Lamport are where real people come to play and gather; they're the heart of the city. It's an incredible low-tech place in the middle of an exploding high tech wonderland
