Pelican Bay State Penitentiary, Fort Dick, California
Pelican Bay State Penitentiary has a reputation for holding Calfornia's worst of the worst offenders. Located just north of Crescent City, it's virtually impossible to go farther north in California than this.
Pelican Bay's history is contentious as is the concept of a supermax prison in general. I don't personally think it's appropriate to go easy on crime in any way, but these prisons appear to have the effect of, more than anything else, teaching bad criminals how to be worse criminals; there's a great deal of uncertainty about how effective they are.
